Aiguèze, a medieval village in Occitanian Provence

On the border between the Gard and the Ardèche, Aiguèze boasts some authentic Middle Age heritage. If you enjoy old castles and love wines, you are in for a treat in this typically southern, vine-growing village.

Aiguèze in a nutshell

Aiguèze is just twenty or so kilometres from our Les Cascades campsite. Visitors are sure to be won over by the old stones and the stunning view of the Gorges de l’Ardèche from this picture-postcard village. Like La Roque-sur-Cèze, it is one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” and has kept its own special identity, despite invasions by the Saracens in the 8th century. Although not everything has stood the test of time, you can visit the remains of the keep and fortress.

What is there to see and do in Aiguèze?

Aiguèze has plenty of surprises in store for visitors staying at our campsite in the Gard. For a start, there is:

  • The Place du Jeu de Paume, a square in the heart of the village, where you’ll find Saint-Roch fountain and the parish church.
  • Historic houses with Romanesque arches and mullion windows dating from the Renaissance.
  • The Castelas, the former wall walk which combines an instructive stroll with views of the old castle, the Sarrasine Tower and the keep.
  • Finally, the area’s generous natural environment and the work of the winegrowers mean the wines produced in Aiguèze benefit from the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages appellation, well-known and widely appreciated in France. A source of pride for the village.
