Avignon, the city of Popes and the capital of theatre

The extraordinary walled city of Avignon attracts tourists from all over the world, intrigued by its architecture, its history and its world-famous festival.

On the border of the Gard region and close to our Les Cascades campsite, Avignon is the administrative centre of the Vaucluse and will never cease to amaze you.

Avignon, the essentials

Step through the walls of the “City of Popes” and fall under the spell of Avignon and its culture. You may already have heard of the medieval Saint-Bénézet bridge, made famous in the song “Sur le pont d'Avignon”? You will be able to look out over it, or observe it from the beautiful Rocher des Doms garden, which offers a magnificent view of the city.

Another emblematic site is the Palace of the Popes. This is one of the most visited monuments in France and the largest Gothic building of the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, it served to house and protect the popes, but it is now the site of temporary exhibitions and concerts.

A cultural city par excellence

If you visit Avignon in July, you’ll have the chance to discover the world’s largest festival of theatre and the performing arts. Founded by Jean Vilar in 1947, the Avignon Festival encompasses over 30 venues around the city and adds huge vitality to its cultural scene.

Attend one (or more!) of the diverse performances and wander through the city’s picturesque pedestrian streets to soak up the lively atmosphere. From rue des Teinturiers to the market in Place Pie and the Opera, Avignon will immerse you in the colours of Provence.
