La Roque-sur-Cèze, a surprising town in the heart of nature

In the north of the Gard, nestled between river and countryside, explore La Roque-sur-Cèze and its surroundings.
This wonderful location is not only home to our superb 4 star campsite, Les Cascades, but it was also named one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” in 2007.

A historical village teeming with charm

Perched on a rocky outcrop, La Roque-sur-Cèze benefits from an unspoilt natural environment and has conserved its historic architecture. The remains of an old castle and its Romanesque chapel overlook the medieval village and the River Cèze, offering visitors a spectacular view.

The stones in the village bear the traces of past events testifying to the locals’ spirit of solidarity:

  • To facilitate access for parishioners and replace the castle’s chapel, which was gradually falling into ruin, a new church was built. This was made possible by the mayor Ernest Roux, with help from many Roquairols* who contributed both money and labour. Thanks to donations, it was renovated after the Second World War and again in 2012.
  • Access to the River Cèze was difficult and tiring for the village’s women so the Marquis Deydié de Grémian, Mayor Camproux and local husbands set about building a washhouse in the heart of the village in 1841.

There are other cultural and historical sites to see, such as the Charles Martel Bridge, which measures 155 metres long, and the two towers from the Middle Ages.

Swimming and strolls

Among the most appealing aspects of La Roque-sur-Cèze and its surroundings are the water holes and waterfalls. The best-known spot in the area is the Cascades du Sautadet, where the waterfalls tumble into the limestone rocks, carved out by the current.

If you fancy a dip, it’s preferable to head for the beach and river accessible from our campsite!

And less than a 30-minute drive from La Roque-sur-Cèze, you can also discover: the Concluses de Lussan, La Chartreuse de la Valbonne and the Aven d’Orgnac sites.
