Orange, the “City of Princes”

When in Provence, stop off in Orange, a town steeped in history with Roman buildings and Celtic fortifications. On a camping holiday in La Roque-sur-Cèze? A great opportunity to visit this town in the neighbouring department.

Outstanding Roman monuments

When visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you are sure to spot the triumphal arch and the ancient theatre of Orange, built in the early Christian era. With its three majestic archways, the triumphal arch is astounding. Meanwhile the famous theatre is known to be the only Roman theatre in Europe to have retained its stage wall.

Take a stroll in the town to admire its charming narrow streets and its typically Provençal architecture. An interesting fact for you: the name of the town has no connection with the fruit. The most likely explanation is that Orange comes from “arausio”, which means “the town near the river” in Latin.

Enjoy the festivities in the Vaucluse

The Gard is not the only place where you can enjoy fantastic festivities in summer. Orange is home to one of the oldest festivals in France: the Chorégies, founded in 1869 and celebrating opera in the ancient theatre in Orange.

Meanwhile, wine lovers will enjoy exploring the region which is full of well-known Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Gigondas, Cairanne, Rasteau, and more.
