The Cévennes, to the south of the Massif Central

There’s no need for golden sand, palaces and emblematic monuments to spend a wonderful summer. In the Cévennes Massif, which has the “Grand Site Occitanie” label and straddles the Lozère, the Gard, the Hérault and the Aveyron, nature will be your inspiration.

A natural paradise…

Are you looking for a natural setting where you can switch off completely? In the Cévennes, you’re in for a treat. With its unspoilt Natural Park, Mont Lozère and Mont Aigoual, the Cévennes are like the garden of Eden. Take this opportunity to explore the lush green landscapes on foot, in a canoe or on a mountain bike.

This is the ideal terrain for a recreational holiday in the Gard as you can also go potholing in the many caves, follow the via ferrata along some of the most beautiful peaks, or go canyoning or paragliding in the Cévennes valley.

…that is brimming with cultural activities

The Cévennes are also steeped in history, marked by the Camisard wars, the coal mining industry and silk production. Its past is therefore closely tied to the Protestants (the Camisards) and the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. A distinct “region” has been shaped over the centuries, with its own strong identity.

When you stay in La Roque-sur-Cèze, you’ll be just a short distance from the Cévennes and its towns and villages full of charm, including:

  • Alès, a key town in the Gard, with its show mine and many museums
  • Anduze, a small town on the banks of the Gardon, with rich natural and cultural heritage
  • Sauve, a village full of character and typical Cévennes architecture
  • Vézénobres, a village perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the garrigue scrubland on one side and the Gardon plains on the other
  • Saint-Enimie, an old medieval village awarded the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” label, with its lovely peaceful atmosphere
  • La Canourge, nicknamed the “Venice of Lozère”
  • Le Pont-de-Montvert, an important place on the route travelled by Robert Louis Stevenson
