Allègre-les-Fumades, in the heart of the southern Cévennes

When on holiday in the Gard, take some time out for some pampering. Allègre-les-Fumades is home to a historic spa resort and ideal for a wellness break with massages and other treatments.

A historical spa resort

Although it has just 779 inhabitants living in 7 hamlets, the charming village of Allègre-les-Fumades has plenty to boast about. First, it is the only spa resort in the Gard. Rich in hydrogen sulphide, the area’s springs are blessed with medicinal properties whose virtues were known to the Gauls and the Romans. Legend has it that Julius Caesar himself once stayed here.
In the 19th century, well-known doctor Louis Eugène Perrier managed the resort before selling it to purchase the Les Bouillens spring in Vergèze. That spring that was named after him as a tribute in 1906.

The Fumade-les-Bains resort had remained in constant activity until recently, providing healing treatments, baths with essential oils, massages and more. However, it has been undergoing renovation since 2020 and is set to reopen in 2024.
